The Barn at Boyds Mills is the home of the Highlights Foundation.  We’re located near the Poconos Mountains of Pennsylvania. It’s worlds away from the grind of daily life, but we try to make it easy for you to get here.

Traveling To Our Campus

Driving

Our Retreat Center is located in Milanville, PA (also called Boyds Mills, PA depending on what map you’re using). There is ample free parking.

If you enter 362 Boyds Mills Road, Milanville, PA 18443 into your navigation app, you should find us. We can also provide more specific directions if you need them; just inquire when finalizing your arrangements.

We have an Electric Vehicle Charging Station available to charge your vehicle, if needed.  See the charging station.

Note: If you are coming from points north of the Retreat Center (i.e. Vermont and upstate New York, not New York City), the Milanville bridge is “out” right now and a detour is recommended.

Getting here

Flying

Our campus is a 1-hour drive from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre International, our closest airport.

However, the Highlights Foundation is also within driving distance to major airports including Newark Liberty International (2.5 hours), LaGuardia and JFK in New York City (3 hours), and Philadelphia International (3 hours).

To complete your journey to campus from a nearby airport, car rental services and third-party transportation services are available. We strongly suggest arranging third-party transportation in advance (see our list of third-party providers below).

PLEASE NOTE: Uber, Lyft, and other ride-sharing apps are generally NOT AVAILABLE around our campus.  Please do not rely on them for ground transportation, because the option will probably not be available for your arrival and departure (even if the app indicates it could be).

By Bus

From NYC to Hawley, PA: The bus station in Hawley, PA is served by ShortLine bus routes from the New York City Port Authority.  To complete your journey to the retreat center from Hawley, local taxi service and third-party transportation are available.  We strongly suggest arranging local taxi service or third-party transportation in advance (see our list of third-party providers below).

From NYC to Scranton, PA: The bus station in Scranton, PA is served by a Greyhound bus route from the Port Authority.  There is also a FlixBus route between NYC Midtown (31st Street and 8th Avenue) and Scranton, PA.  To complete your journey to the retreat center from Scranton, third-party transportation is available.  We strongly suggest arranging third-party transportation in advance (see our list of third-party providers below).

From Philadelphia to Scranton, PA: There is a Greyound Bus route between Philadelphia and Scranton, PA.  To complete your journey to the retreat center from Scranton, third-party transportation is available.  We strongly suggest arranging third-party transportation in advance (see our list of third-party providers below).

By Train

From NYC to Port Jervis, NY: Port Jervis is a 55-minute drive from our campus. Its train station is served by NJ Transit with transfer service into NYC.  To complete your journey to the retreat center from Port Jervis, third-party transportation is available.  We strongly suggest arranging third-party transportation in advance (see our list of third-party providers below).

Shuttle Service

The Highlights Foundation will no longer offer in-house shuttle service for 2025 stay dates.

If you are flying or taking a bus or train to our general area, you can explore third-party car service options to complete your journey to our retreat center.

Please note that these services are available at your own expense, and the Highlights Foundation is not affiliated with, or responsible for, these operations.  Please research and arrange these options as you see fit. 

TIP! Most of the services below offer discounted rates when pooling with more than one passenger. If you will be here with a group, we highly recommend coordinating travel plans in order to share ride services and costs.

That’s OK! If you’re coming as part of a Highlights Foundation workshop, it would helpful if you let us know if you’ll be arriving after the check-in window of 3-5pm. If your travel plans change before the start date of your event, go ahead and send us a note here. If your travel plans change on the day of your arrival, call 570-253-1192. (Please note: if it’s after 5pm on the day you’re arriving and you need a dinner plate saved, please contact the Barn directly: 570-729-7903).

If you arrive before 3 p.m., we invite you to find a comfortable spot on campus to relax (The Barn, The Granary, The Lodge Great Room, etc.) until your lodging is ready. If you are arriving early enough to have lunch (for an additional fee), please contact us to ensure we can accommodate your request.
